Phone Calls

For routine questions, we would appreciate you calling during regular office hours. However, we are available after-hours through our 24-hour answering service for urgent questions. Please be mindful that this service is meant for urgent issues only. In case of a true emergency, it is best to proceed to your nearest emergency room. If you feel that you have an urgent issue that can not wait until regular office hours, do not hesitate to call us. Appropriate urgent conditions are listed throughout this booklet at the end of each section under “call our office immediately if …” Please do not call us after-hours for non-urgent issues, such as prescription refills, management of behavioral issues or recommendations on which sunscreen is best to use. There will be a charge for non-urgent after-hours calls.

When you call, please be prepared to give us your child’s name, age, temperature, approximate weight, exact symptoms, and your local pharmacy telephone number. If calling during our regular office hours, one of our nurses generally will be able to answer most questions. However, if you feel that your question requires a doctor’s assistance, please leave a message and you will be called back, usually by the end of the day.

Please call during regular business hours for routine questions and prescription renewals. There will be a charge for after-hours refills or routine questions. In the future, there may be a charge for all calls that do not lead to an Emergency Department visit.
Appointments

Appointments may be booked Monday-Thursday 9:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.  and Friday 9:00A.M.- 2:00 P.M.Well-child exams/camp and school physicals typically must be booked well in advance. Please be on time for your appointment. If you are more than 15 minutes late, your appointment may be rescheduled. Please do not request that we see a sibling at the same time unless you call for an appointment as it causes delays in our schedule. There is a charge for appointments not cancelled 24 hours in advance.

Make sure to call far in advance to schedule your child’s well visits. We will always do our best to fit you into our calendar, however you will have the best chance of getting the appointment you desire by scheduling it as far in advance as possible.
The well child visit is the cornerstone of pediatric healthcare. The visit focuses on health, preventative strategies, anticipatory guidance, developmental assessment, and screening of common pediatric health problems.

During well child visits, we expect to and want to answer your questions about your child’s physical and emotional health and development. However, detailed discussions should be reserved for a specific consultation visit. Feel free to make such an appointment at another time.

We follow the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations on when to schedule well child visits. The visits generally are as follows: 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 2 years, 2 ½ years, 3 years and yearly thereafter. Immunizations, blood and urine tests are recommended at some of the visits and will be discussed with you in detail. At each well child visit we will give you a handout. It will include information such as height, weight, anticipatory guidance and developmental information.
Insurance and Office Fees

We participate with many insurance companies and will be happy to handle your claims. However, it is your responsibility to know your plan’s coverage. Our billing staff is available to assist you with your billing inquiries. In order to better serve you, we ask you to first understand your insurance benefits. Be sure to check your co-pay, deductibles, covered and not covered services prior to your visit. Your insurance co-payment and payment for all out-of-pocket services are expected at the time of each visit and we appreciate the prompt payment of outstanding balances.

For a small fee, blood may be drawn in the office instead of going to a laboratory. Additional fees are also charged for completion of school forms, performing a rapid strep test or rapid flu test.
Emergencies

In any situation where you feel your child’s life is in danger, call 911. You can call us later from the hospital.

If you suspect your child has ingested something poisonous, call the National Capital Poison Center (Mr. Yuk) at 1-800-222-1222. They will give you exact instructions about the necessary steps to follow. Call to update us after you have carried out the Poison Center’s instructions.

Medication Refills

Please try to request medication refills while you are in the office. If you call in for a medication refill, you must allow three business days before the refill is ready to be picked up or mailed.

Referrals

In order for your insurance company to cover your child’s specialist, our name must be on the insurance card and the specialist must participate in your plan. After we recommend a specialist, you should call the specialist for an appointment.Once you have obtained the appointment, we will complete the referral. Please allow at least three days for us to fill out the referral. Many insurances will not cover your visit without a referral and will not accept a retroactive referral.
Advice

If your child is experiencing a life-threatening emergency call 911 immediately.

Please call during regular business hours for all sick child questions and for general advice. Sick but stable children will be fit into the schedule as needed. All other general advice questions will be answered as promptly as the schedule allows but not necessarily on the same day.

After-hours advice is available for urgent questions. Please do not call the after-hours service with routine questions.
